Quantum field thermalization in expanding backgrounds
نویسنده
چکیده
The 2PI effective action formalism for quantum fields out of equilibrium is set up in an expanding (Friedmann-Robertson-Walker) background. We write down and solve the evolution equations for a φ4 model at O(λ2) in a coupling expansion. We comment on issues of renormalization, lattice discretization and the range of applicability of the approach. A number of example calculations are presented, including thermalization and (p)reheating. Generalizations to more complicated systems and applications are discussed.

String field theory
This elementary introduction to string field theory highlights the features and the limitations of this approach to quantum gravity as it is currently understood. String field theory is a formulation of string theory as a field theory in space-time with an infinite number of massive fields. Although existing constructions of string field theory require expanding around a fixed choice of space-t...
متن کاملTest of quantum thermalization in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model
We study the quantum relaxation of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model after global quenches with a real-time variational Monte Carlo method and address the question whether this non-integrable, two-dimensional system thermalizes or not. We consider both interaction quenches in the paramagnetic phase and field quenches in the ferromagnetic phase and compare the time-averaged probab...
متن کاملEigenstate thermalization in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model.
We study the onset of eigenstate thermalization in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model (2D-TFIM) in the square lattice. We consider two nonequivalent Hamiltonians: the ferromagnetic 2D-TFIM and the antiferromagnetic 2D-TFIM in the presence of a uniform longitudinal field. We use full exact diagonalization to examine the behavior of quantum chaos indicators and of the diagonal matri...
متن کاملThermalization of an Interacting Quantum Field in the CTP-2PI Next-to-leading-order Large N Scheme
In this paper we use an O(N)-invariant scalar field of unbroken symmetry to investigate whether an interacting quantum field at the next-to-leading order Large N approximation may show signs of thermalization. We develop the closed time-path (CTP) two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action in powers of 1/N , retaining up to next to leading order (O(1)) terms, and write down the correspondi...
متن کاملQuasiparticle explanation of the weak-thermalization regime under quench in a nonintegrable quantum spin chain
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis provides one picture of thermalization in a quantum system by looking at individual eigenstates. However, it is also important to consider how local observables reach equilibrium values dynamically. Quench protocol is one of the settings to study such questions. A recent numerical study [Bañuls, Cirac, and Hastings, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 050405 (2007)] o...
